In Memory

Russell Piekarski

April 26, 1991 - March 29, 1991

Hi Reunion 1969 -
Attached is an obit from Portland OR on Russ, who died in 1991. I was a White Bear HS grad who dated him summer 1969 before he went to Luther College for that year. What a dancer! He always had a twinkle in his eye, and was a funny funny guy.

In elementary school, Russ was very interested in becoming a pilot but I guess he changed his mind somewhere along the way. What a funny guy- I mean, ha-ha funny. For several years following high school Russ was one of a group of friends who I kept in touch with. He got married young and had a son while many of us were just worrying about term papers and partying. He had some rough years following a divorce but eventually moved to the west coast to be nearer to his son where Russ began a new career in legal services. My memory is not what it used to be (duh) but I believe he was employed as a court reporter and had begun work toward a law degree when he died from a heart attack. Out of nowhere one day on the way to work at least 15 years ago it occurred to me that Russell Piekarski should have been a writer- he was good at telling a story and had a very creative imagination. Later that week I learned from a newspaper obituary that he had died the day I had that thought. I would love to talk to him again.

Russell was not only a classmate of mine, but also he attended the same church, Lakeview Lutheran Church in Maplewood. We were confirmed together. Russ was a jokester, and a great guy. He directed a church play once, and I was his assistant director - which I think mostly meant that I was the prompter hidden to give persons forgetting their lines, their lines. I feel bad that he died. He had so much more to give others, with his love of life.

I remember eating lunch with Russ in high school. He had a great sense of humor. He had a quick wit and a distinctive, infectious laugh. It's sad to think his great laugh will never be heard again.
